HBO had already confirmed that the series would return for a second season that would be based on The Last of Us Part II, the second installment of the iconic video game. However, for some time now, strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) have cast a pall of uncertainty over the production of numerous series and films, including The Last of Us.

What is the current situation of the series?
According to Mazin, all of the writers and actors credited on season 2 of The Last of Us they cannot return to their work until the strikes come to an end. However, the creator of the series mentioned that those who work “below the line” can continue their work.
With these statements, probably some fan has been relieved to read this, however, this would not end here. Most discouraging was Mazin’s claim that he is “almost certain” shooting will not start as scheduled due to strikes. This represents a major setback, as filming was targeted to begin in early 2024. Considering the unpredictability of the duration of the strikes, it is likely that the Season 2 release date will be significantly pushed back, moving it out of the release window. release planned for early/spring 2025 to second half of the year, possibly fall 2025.

Mazin also took the opportunity to emphasize that the passion and commitment of the team behind the series go beyond financial issues. He pointed out that everyone is eager to start production and that this is the reason why they chose to work in this “crazy” so-called entertainment industry. He stated emphatically, “This is what we were born to do. This is how we not only choose to live our lives, but I believe we are compelled to live our lives. Otherwise why the hell would we do this crazy job? I can assure them that it is not for money”.
Mazin also provided information on the state of production before the start of the strikes. He revealed that he had planned the entire season 2 and had even completed and submitted the script for the first episode to HBO shortly before the strikes began.
Given the unpredictable nature of the strikes and their impact on the entertainment industry, it is difficult to predict with certainty when filming for the second season of TI’ve Last of Us. However, as productions remain paralyzed and filming dates pushed back, agreements will eventually be reached and work on this highly anticipated series will resume.
