The Ring General faced Chad Gable in the third match of their recent trilogy knowing that a win would mean on Friday he will break Honky Tonk Man’s record to become the longest reigning IC Champ of all time.
With so much at stake, WWE did a great job of hyping up what this match meant to both men throughout the night, and the stage was set for something special.
Gable’s family was at ringside for what was arguably the biggest match of his career to date as he found himself as the final stop on GUNTHER’s road to immortality.
Given their previous matches – and undeniable talent on both sides – it’s no surprise they rose to the occasion with an energetic, physical and dramatic contest.
From the Alpha Academy leader’s strength to GUNTHER’s pure dominance, everything was on display here as they fought hard to put on an epic show.
In the end, the champion retained with a huge Lariat and Powerbomb, putting Gable down for a three count as his children burst into tears in the front row.
After the show went off air, the unsuccessful challenger has spoken backstage and made it clear he’s not done with GUNTHER or his pursuit of the gold, and the right move would be to let him be the one to dethrone the champ.
The Miz fights invisible John Cena, Shinsuke Nakamura refuses Seth Rollins challenge and more
Jey Uso kicked off Raw to a massive ovation from the fans and talked about finally flying solo after his move to the red brand, before Sami Zayn came out, giving his longtime rival turned friend a pep talk and sharing a hug to another huge cheer.
Drew McIntyre and Matt Riddle didn’t seem happy to see Jey as they passed him on the ramp, but carried on down to the ring for face The Viking Raiders in a Tornado Tag Match.
The action was hard hitting and fun from bell to bell, and the ending will spark more issues (in a good way) going forward.
Kofi Kingston came down to try and help the Glas-Bros, but accidentally caught Riddle with Trouble in Paradise, which let Eric and Ivar send him through a table for the pin.
In a video package, Shinsuke Nakamura vowed to win the World Heavyweight Championship from Seth Rollins after their match at Payback.
However, when the Visionary called out Nakamura and – despite not being cleared for action – suggested a rematch, his rival said ‘no’ repeatedly, sparking a brawl between the two.
After the break, Nakamura lost to Ricochet after hitting him with a chair causing a disqualification following some great action between the two, and while Rollins went on the attack afterwards, the Artist gained the upper hand but got chased off by Ricochet.
The Archer of Infamy wasn’t happy with JD McDonagh getting a shout out over the tag title with at Payback, but the Irishman looked to get in the good books as he gave Priest a purple MITB briefcase.
Sami Zayn interrupted, leading to an entertaining match with McDonagh later in the night, which the latter won due to interference from Dominik Mysterio.
Elsewhere, Shayna Baszler beat Zoey Stark as both women delivered between the ropes, with the Queen of Spades locking in the Kirifuda Clutch following an epic springboard attack.
There was a show of respect from both women, and we could be looking at a new tag team.
After news Piper Niven isn’t medically cleared to complete, her fellow Women’s Tag Team Champion Chelsea Green took on Raquel Rodriguez and got totally dominated as Raquel won, setting up her rematch with Rhea Ripley for next week.
Finally, The Miz continued his feud with LA Knight and laid down another challenge after introducing John Cena as this week’s guest on Miz TV.
Although the legend’s music played and Miz reacted like he was there, we couldn’t ‘see him’, leading to a brilliantly funny interview and beatdown on an invisible Cena.
WWE Raw airs Monday nights at 1am on TNT Sports 1.
